Tips To Keep Your Heat on
Never go without heat… follow these tips!
January 24, 2023
Cold temps put extra strain on heating systems - which is why they are most likely to die at the worst time! Installing new boilers or furnaces can take multiple days and oftentimes heating companies cannot get there for days or even weeks. That is why it is essential to be proactive at maintaining your heating system and being proactive with any potential problems.
Annual Maintenance
Heating systems are like cars - routine maintenance is essential to keep them running. Just like a car needs routine oil changes and more work with age, heating systems need annual tune and cleans and, with time, may need additional maintenance. If you defer maintenance, just like a car that doesn’t get its oil changed, the system can have more damage or even completely break. The $199 for annual maintenance we charge at Gallagher Plumbing, Heating, & Cooling, can prevent further damage or identify problems before they cause greater damage. Deferred maintenance leads to more costly damage!
Another benefit of annual maintenance is it allows the system to work more efficiently. This means saving money on fuel cost. Win-win!
Keep Track of Fuel
Oftentimes customers call for no heat and are found to have no fuel. Your car can’t run without gas - your heating system can’t run without the right fuel. Running out of fuel can result in emergency delivery fees and emergency service fees to start the system up again. Also, when it runs out of fuel, filters inside the system can get clogged - and in some instances cause even further damage. This is an easy fix. Sign up with your fuel provider for automatic delivery or check your tank regularly.
Check The Outside Unit
If you heat your home with a heat pump system, the outside unit needs to be clean and clear of any clutter. This includes snow, leaves, and other yard debris. This allows proper airflow to keep the system running and breathing the way it should.
Assess If It’s The Right System For You
Avoid overextending your system by making sure you have an appropriate size system for your needs. Working your system too hard can put excessive strain on your system and result in damage.
Be Proactive
As previously mentioned, colder temperatures put more strain on heating systems. If your system is older and nearing the end of its life - talk to one of our technicians about proactively replacing it during warmer weather. This would benefit you to get you a more efficient system and avoid winter days without heat while the system is being replaced.
